The Get Active Great Outdoors Challenge

Summer 2016

#GSTActiveChallenge

Following on from its success last year, we are very excited to announce that we will be having another Get Active Great Outdoors Challenge across the Trust. Schools who are participating will be challenging their pupils, families and staff to get outdoors, get active and get fit.

Last summer, lots of children and families from several of our schools were really motivated to get involved. Some did more than usual, some took up new activities and some just enjoyed being able to share what they usually do. Many reported how much they enjoyed being ‘scree-free’ for longer each day because of the Challenge. Children brought in photographs and drew pictures, and parents tweeted about their activities. There were certainly great benefits for everyone who rose to the challenge and it was a really positive way to involve families at home and bring a real sense of community to each school and the group of schools taking part.

Here are some examples of the outdoor activities which we will be encouraging for the second year:

  •          Building a den
  •          Going on a bug hunt
  •          Rock-pooling
  •          Pond dipping
  •          Going on a bike ride
  •          Going for a walk
  •          Playing cricket on the beach
  •          Taking part in a race such as the weekly Park Run
  •          Having a snail race
  •          Having a game of crazy golf
  •          Playing tennis at your local park
  •          Racing on scooters and skates
  •          Growing plants
  •          Cycling, scooting, walking to school
  •          Walking into town
  •          Training for the Children’s Cancer Run

The schools taking part are also directing families to look at http://www.naturedetectives.org.uk/summer for more ideas of how to enjoy the outdoors, get active and have fun.

The challenge will start at different times in each school (to suit different school calendars) and will run until Friday 1st July. During that time children will bring in either photographs or drawings of their challenge activities. Parents will be encouraged to Tweet any pictures or descriptions of using the hashtag #GSTActiveChallenge so that the activities can be celebrated across the Trust for all to see.
